Historic Jeddah in autumn 2026: Culture Square, museums and what to see
No Al-Balad festival is announced for October–November 2026, but Culture Square programming starts in November. Your autumn guide to Historic Jeddah.
As the evenings slowly cool in autumn, Historic Jeddah, known as Al-Balad, becomes a favourite place to wander among old houses and souqs again. At the time of writing no seasonal festival has been announced for Al-Balad in October or November 2026, but the Red Sea Film Foundation says it will start year-round programming at Culture Square in Historic Jeddah from November 2026.

What is new this autumn
In September 2026 the Red Sea Film Foundation postponed the sixth Red Sea International Film Festival, which had been planned for December 2026, to the fourth quarter of 2027. The foundation said the decision followed a full review of timing and of the logistics of staging an international event of this size.
At the same time, it confirmed that Culture Square in Historic Jeddah will host year-round programming from November 2026, including film screenings, cultural events and specialised filmmaking programmes. Details and dates will be announced on its official channels, so no specific days have been set yet.
The Red Sea Fund and Red Sea Labs also continue to support filmmakers year-round, though these are aimed at professionals rather than visitors.
For context, Al-Balad's best-known events usually fall in other seasons: the Historic Jeddah Festival tends to coincide with Ramadan, Balad Beast took place in January 2026, and the heritage visits of Jeddah Season 2026 ended in mid-August. That makes autumn a good time for a quieter visit focused on museums, architecture and the souqs.
What to see in Al-Balad
Culture Square
Launched by the Ministry of Culture's Historic Jeddah Program on the banks of Al-Arbaeen Lagoon, Culture Square covers 26,000 square metres. Its Center for Performing Arts has an 868-seat theatre and five cinema halls, and houses the Red Sea film festival's headquarters.
The square is also home to teamLab Borderless Jeddah, the digital art museum that opened in June 2024, and the Prince of the Sea House, a restored octagonal building that once served as a lighthouse. Check teamLab's official website for current hours and prices before you go.
The Red Sea Museum at Bab Al-Bunt
The Museums Commission opened the Red Sea Museum in December 2025 in the restored Bab Al-Bunt building. It holds more than 1,000 objects and artworks across 23 galleries in seven themes, from navigation instruments, Chinese ceramics and manuscripts to rare photographs and contemporary art.
Old houses and souqs
Al-Balad is known for its coral-stone houses with wooden rawasheen balconies, Beit Nassif among the best known. Traditional markets such as Souq Al-Alawi and the Bab Makkah markets bring the walk to life with perfumes, spices and Hijazi sweets. Historic Jeddah was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.
Tips before you go
- Go in the late afternoon or evening: October days are still hot, and evenings get gentler through November.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as most of the visit is on foot through narrow lanes.
- Some shops close at prayer times, so plan your souq visit around them.
- Check museum and landmark hours on their official channels before you go, as they can change.
- Al-Balad is a lived-in neighbourhood: respect residents' privacy when taking photos and dress modestly.
If you plan to attend Culture Square programmes, watch the Red Sea Film Foundation's announcements through October, as details are expected before the November start.
Getting there
Historic Jeddah is in the city centre near the old waterfront, and most of its inner lanes are pedestrian. Set your destination at a clear landmark on the edge of the district, such as Bab Al-Bunt or Culture Square, and continue on foot.
You can book a ride in the Drovox Passenger app and see the fare before you confirm. Women riders can choose the women option so only female Heroes receive the request.
Follow the event's official channels for any change to the schedule, and see the Red Sea Film Foundation website for Culture Square programming.
